This week, I’m zooming back to 2021 to shed light on a nifty piece of tech that caught my engineer’s eye—DeepMind’s AlphaFold 2! This AI champ took a stab at one of biology’s biggest mysteries: protein folding.

Why the fuss about folding, you ask? Well, knowing how a protein folds is like having a roadmap to understanding many diseases and accelerating drug discovery. AlphaFold 2 made a splash by predicting protein structures with jaw-dropping accuracy, clinching the top spot in the 14th Critical Assessment of Structure Prediction (CASP14).
